Will symlinks help exclude Google Drive from backing up subfolders in My Documents?

Finally. I think I understand how symlinks might be used to exclude folders from backup.

But is my situation an exception?

1. I'm using Google Drive (B&S) to backup My Documents by default.

2. I have some games that insist on creating a file structure inside My Documents

3. At least two of the games (GTA5 is one) appear to use that structure for some kind of cache-like, high intensity behavior. So, while gaming, Google Drive is intensely backing up a bunch of temp files that keep changing. Frequent crashing ensues.

So I'm ready to symlink as explained. But when I look closely to plan my strategy, I suspect the explanation does not apply to the case where Google Drive is backing up My Documents.
