How would I determine the processes that are using 5GB per day when my Windows 10 laptop is offline?
In looking at local storage, "Other People" is conspicuous. I am the only user on this machine and "Other People" is using 8 GB of disk space.
- Most recently, I watched the available diskspace drop from 2.1 TB to 720 MB when the laptop is powered on.
Questions and Notes:
Q: How would I identify the processes that are burning through my diskspace (even when I am disconnected) at a rate of 5 GB per day?
Note: All options to apply updates have been postponed for several weeks. This is done in
Settings | Update & Security
.Q: What and who are "Other People" and why do they need so much space?
Note: Disk cleanup does not free anything (even when run as Administrator).
Note: The Remove options under System | Settings | Storage also do not remove or recover any space what-so-ever.
4
and 5
above seem to indicate that files are in use and cannot be deleted.
Virus protection is up-to-date and reports no malware instances.
Q: Is there a proven procedure or utility that can identify the process(es) that are using so much diskspace?
Is there a way to prevent downloads or the execution of specific processes if resources are too low for a successful download or execution?
Updates
Microsoft Support is now looking at the logs from the laptop. If they find anything of note, I will share it.
I am going to setup a job to monitor disk usage as per:
Windows: How can I see disk space used over time?
I am also going to take a look at the processes launched on startup.
Additionally, I am going to look at hibernation settings.
Microsoft support has the log files from this laptop. I will share any useful information on what they find.
