I'm interested in learning more about Windows security, specifically vs. most closed systems like Linux, and it struck me in my research that 'Windows' has been around as the technology around it has been changing. I'm looking for the history of Windows in this regard.
One question that I have specifically - when did Microsoft decide that Windows should have a ton of open ports by default?
Thinking about it more, when did Windows implement new users having admin rights by default?
Or were both of these just always the case?
I don't have access to machines older than probably 2014 so I can't go in and look at what Windows XP and earlier were doing with their security.
I've also dug in a bit to the 1995 introduction of device drivers and opening up the world of USB to Windows. Does anyone know about the security implications of that for Windows?
Thanks in advance, I know this is quite the open-ended question.
